“Literature in Spaces” is conceived as a continuing project of interdisciplinary teaching and researching, beginning with “Spatial Readings on Female Writings” as its initiative theme. To stimulate and develop new research interests, it integrates field work into literary criticism through designs of mobile classroom and investigation-on-location, by which text readings are complemented by visiting theme-related environments and spaces. The purpose is to broaden literary horizons in spatial imagination and deepen the integration of different domains. As part of the project, Laboratory on Space and Literature assures further researches in this boundary-crossing exercise that intends to explore more spatial themes in diverse writings from queer to postcolonial. In addition to contributing to the development of literary studies, the project will enhance qualities of humanities and cultural energy in those integrated fields. As for the implementation of the present project, two linked and complementary sub-projects will be its main activities. The sub-project of the module “Literature in Spaces: Spatial Readings on Female Writings” consists of a curriculum divided by four topics: body, ecology, architecture, and illness. Courses will be offered by well-known scholars and to intercollegiate participants. They are conducted in the manner of an intensive summer program at National Dong Hwa University and other locales as well, for in each pedagogic category there will be one course requiring field trip. This particular design works together with the second sub-project “Spatial Writing and Criticism” to solidify an exchange platform for both scholars and writers. The curriculum starts from reading and analyzing texts, moving toward environmental awareness, and ultimately intent on promoting diversity of our domestic writers’ works on spaces and geographies.
Therefore, the second sub-project not only encourages the formation of research groups but also advocates the concept of mobility, emphasizing the significance of spatial and environmental writings in our domestic culture. The missions of this literary group include landscape exploration, academic exchange, website construction and publications. Since highly recognized female writers in Taiwan will join the dialogues with scholars on field trips, this sub-project aims to produce two books for publication in the end, one a collection of scholarly essays and the other a collection of creative writing, both demonstrating the social and cultural concerns behind the practices of literary studies. Meanwhile, scholarly symposiums and conferences, speeches and other related activities will be organized as part of this second sub-project.
