“Literature in Spaces” is conceived as a continuing project of interdisciplinary teaching and researching. To stimulate and develop new research interests, it integrates field work into literary criticism through designs of mobile classroom and investigation-on-location, by which text readings are complemented by visiting theme-related environments and spaces.

The first year of this project has been successfully implemented and achieved to broaden literary horizons in spatial imagination and deepen the integration of different domains. On the one hand, the establishment of Laboratory on Space and Literature has assured further researches in this boundary-crossing exercise that intends to explore more spatial themes in diverse writings. On the other hand, the courses thoughtfully designed by the laboratory have attracted many graduate students from more than ten different universities which covered northern and eastern Taiwan. In addition, many highly regarded scholars from different disciplines have been enthusiastically involved, contributing to not only teaching courses but also to the development of “Literature in Spaces” as an integrated and interdisciplinary field.

Now the second part of the module courses is ready to be launched. The theme of the second year is “Body/Embodiment” which has three inter-related topics as its main emphasis: “performative body,” “historicized body,” and “sexualized body.” The curriculum will enhance the understanding of how subjects such as history and memory, gender construction, cultural conflicts, etc. could be explored through representational embodiments in literary and cultural imaginations. Courses will be offered by well-known scholars and to intercollegiate participants. The mission of the second-year project includes creating an expanded platform for greater participation of young and established scholars as well, promoting diverse scholastic interests, and, meanwhile, enriching our domestic writers’ imagination and raising local awareness of the relations between body, environment, and culture.
